We are honored to have Professor Paul Alkon, University of Southern California, as our speaker for the annual black tie Academic Dinner, held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA). Prof. Alkon is Leo S. Bing Emeritus Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a member of the Board of Academic Advisers of the Churchill Centre. In addition to articles on eighteenth-century English and French literature, on science fiction, and on utopian novels, he is author of Samuel Johnson and Moral Discipline, of Defoe and Fictional Time, of Origins of Futuristic Fiction: Science Fiction before 1900, and, most recently, of Winston Churchill’s Imagination.

The annual black tie Academic Dinner will be held at the Washington Athletic Club, 1325 Sixth Avenue, Seattle, Washington, on the evening of Thursday, September 1, 2011. The evening will begin with a cash bar reception followed by dinner and Professor Alkon’s remarks after dinner. Dinner dress is black tie or dark suit. Wine and beer will be available at 7:00 p.m.; dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Churchill Centre of Chicago and London organizes this dinner annually in conjunction with the meeting of the APSA. The Centre was founded in 1995 under the patronage of Lady Soames LG DBE and has about 3,000 members worldwide. It is the successor organization to the International Churchill Society, which was created in 1968. In 2007, the Centre merged with the Churchill Museum at the Churchill War Rooms in London. An international nonprofit organization, the Centre encourages the study of Winston S. Churchill’s life and thought and strives to keep alive his memory for future generations.
