It’s time once again for… New England Churchillians Summer Picnic & Book Discussion

Our picnic will be held at the weekend home of David and Susan Morse, in the Blue Hills just south of Boston. Our topic book is “Warlord,” by acclaimed biographer and Churchill Centre member Carlo D’Este, who will deliver the Birthday Address at this year’s Sir Winston S. Churchill birthday celebration. We will discuss chapters 1 through 26 (pages 1-311). Before the picnic there will be a ramble through the woods or a bike ride through the Blue Hills Reservation, and after the picnic a swim may be taken in a nearby swimming hole. Tables will be provided, but bring your own lawn chair. See reverse for more information. Please respond by 13 July, using accompanying reply coupon.

*The picnic is weather-dependent, so it is very important that you provide your telephone number in case the picnic has to be rescheduled to Sunday the 18th or, if that date is also inclement, canceled altogether. In case of cancellation, your uncashed check will be destroyed.

Blue Hills Reservation

Comprising over 7000 acres, the Blue Hill Reservation stretches through parts of five cities and towns, and includes 22 hills, forests, ponds, meadows, wetlands and 125 miles of trails. It was established in 1893 due to the vision of landscape architect Charles Eliot, who had worked for Frederick Law Olmstead and studied open space preservation in England and Germany, and of city planner and journalist Sylvester Baxter, who was educated Meadow at Brookwood Farm, May 2010 in Berlin and Leipzig and had studied German municipal administration. Eliot and Baxter saw the need for a metropolitan parks system to forestall encroaching development. By setting aside large tracts of undeveloped land, they sought to prevent the “haphazard assemblage of streets, lots, railroads and streetcar lines.” The Reservation, along with other reservations and parklands in and surrounding Boston, were administered by the Metropolitan Park Commission, the first regional organization of public open space in the United States. Today it is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Pre-Picnic Ramble or Bike Ride; Dip in Swimming Hole. Bring your hiking shoes or bike, and participate in a ramble through the woods to the top of Tucker Hill, or a 10 mile bike tour of the Reservation. Meet at the Morses’ at 10:30 a.m. for the trail ramble, led by David Morse, or the street ride, led by Joe Hern. Bring a suit and towel, for an après-picnic dip in the swimming hole in the woods a few minutes walk behind the Morses’.
