August 2, 2009

Sunday, August 2, 2009 – 4 to 8 pm

Our traditional “Red Hot & Blue” Memphis-style bar-b-que dinner (pulled pork, chicken, beef, baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw and, for dessert, fruit cobbler with ice cream) will precede our speaker. We’ll have plenty of cold drinks on hand, too!

“With Affection and Admiration: Letters of George Marshall and Winston Churchill”

A discussion of what can be learned from the correspondence between the U.S. Army’s wartime Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister. Based on an earlier exhibit at Marshall’s Leesburg home, Dodona Manor, the talk draws upon a series of letters exchanged between the two leaders beginning early in the war, and continuing through Marshall’s death in 1959. They reveal a lasting relationship of deep mutual respect. Provided by the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, and the George C. Marshall Research Library in Lexington, Virginia, the letters run the gamut from details of the invasion of Normandy to congratulatory messages for honors won.

Our speaker, Rachel Thompson, directs special programs at the George C. Marshall International Center in Leesburg. For 31 years, Mrs. Thompson taught American history and government in Fairfax County. She co-authored a biography of General Marshall, and has written educational materials for many nonprofit organizations. She graduated from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee and holds a master’s degree from George Mason University.
