young churchillThe Churchill Centre is pleased to announce our co-sponsorship of a lecture series by The Royal Oak FoundationYoung Titan: The Making of Winston Churchill.

The series will be conducted in the US during the month of April by Dr. Michael Shelden.

In modern memory, Winston Churchill often remains the man with the cigar, the great war-time orator, and the figure seen with equanimity among bombed out ruins. Few can remember that at the age of 40 he was considered washed up, his best days behind him. However, as a young man Churchill set out to become the hero that he believed this era of “great events” demanded.

Historian Michael Shelden will explore Churchill’s early life and career between 1901 and 1915, a time of high drama, personal courage and grave miscalculations that nearly undid him but also forged his character and led him to triumph during the Second World War.

Dr. Shelden will also present a portrait of Churchill as a dashing young suitor who pursued great beauties of British society with his witty repartee, political flair and poetic letters. This lecture will reveal how Churchill’s later success and political greatness was predicated on his formative years and his struggles to redeem the promise of his youth.
