Zurich Marks 70th Anniversary of Churchill’s Speech on Monday, 19 September 2016

Let Europe Arise

A one-day conference will take place at the University of Zurich to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of one of Winston Churchill’s most important post-war speeches. On 19 September 1946, Churchill spoke on “The Tragedy of Europe” and proposed “a kind of United States of Europe” based on a rapprochement between the French and the Germans. He ended with the exhortation, “Let Europe Arise!” At the conference, scholars will discuss the significance of Churchill’s remarks. The event will culminate with remarks by the Swiss President and the President of the European Union Commission.

The newest issue of Finest Hour also marks this anniversary of Churchill’s Zurich speech with contributions by European authors providing contemporary views of Churchill. Two of the contributors, Felix Klos of the Netherlands and Werner Vogt of Switzerland, will be speaking at the Zurich conference, which takes place on the afternoon of the anniversary date.
