Jerusalem Foundation to Honor Sir Winston Churchill November 4, 2012

The unveiling of a newly cast Churchill bust by Oscar Nemon to take place next month.
Nemon-and-ChurchillChurchill Archives Centre, The Nemon Papers, NEMO 4/3bTHE JERUSALEM FOUNDATION, August 2012—Throughout his career, Sir Winston Churchill demonstrated unflinching support for Israel as an independent Jewish state and it remained a dominant element in his foreign policy.

To recognize Sir Winston Churchill’s contribution, the Jerusalem Foundation will dedicate a bust of Churchill in Mishkenot Sha’ananim, in the Yael Garden overlooking the Old City walls of Jerusalem.

The bust was made from a cast originated by Oscar Nemon, who was Churchill’s sculptor.

Sir Winston Churchill’s contribution to Israel will be recognized annually through the Sir Winston Churchill Lecture at Mishkenot Sha’ananim. We are pleased to introduce the inaugural Sir Winston Churchill lecture following the dedication of the bust. The annual lecture will be an opportunity for the Israeli public to learn about Churchill, his life, achievements and values from world class lecturers in the field.

The bust will be inaugurated in Yael’s Garden in Mishkenot Sh’ananim, Jerusalem, on 4 November 2012, in the presence of Churchill family members, the British Ambassador to the State of Israel and senior officials of the British government.

Editor’s Note: The first Churchill lecture was to take place along with the unveiling, however the lecture has been postponed until 2013. We’ll post an update once a new date is chosen.

About the photo: c1951, photograph of sculptor, Oscar Nemon, posing with Churchill’s sculpted bust of Nemon, standing in front of Nemon’ bust of Churchill. Although Nemon successfully fled Nazi persecution before the war, much of his family was not so fortunate. Nemon greatly admired Churchill, calling him “one of the most remarkable personalities of all time”.
