Forbes Magazine Salutes Churchill: The Indispensable Man

Steve ForbesCommemorating the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War, Forbes magazine’s October 20 issue includes a feature editorial by Editor-in-Chief Steve Forbes lauding the indispensable role played by Winston Churchill in defying Nazi Germany in 1939-40. Forbes, a long-time Churchillian and supporter of The Churchill Centre, notes “Civilization hung in the balance and . . . only Winston Churchill’s leadership kept Britain in the war when all seemed lost.”

The editorial adds that “If Britain hadn’t been in the war when Hitler invaded Russia, the U.S. would never have provided critical aid to Moscow” with the result that “Germany and Japan would have dominated the world.” Forbes notes, “the political ramifications of a global Nazi/fascist victory are too ghastly to contemplate.”

The editorial concludes by quoting Pulitzer prize-winning commentator Charles Krauthammer: “Without Churchill the world today would be unrecognizable—dark, impoverished, tortured. Victory required one man . . . Winston Churchill.
