THE CHURCHILL DOCUMENTS: Volume 18
One Continent Redeemed, January—August 1943

Vol18 front-coverHillsdale College Press has published the latest installment in the Official Biography of Sir Winston Churchill. One Continent Redeemed tells Churchill’s story during the first eight months of 1943 and serves as the second companion volume to Winston S. Churchill, Volume VII, Road to Victory, by Sir Martin Gilbert. This is the first volume of The Churchill Documents edited by Dr Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College and former research assistant to Sir Martin.

Beginning with the Casablanca conference between Churchill and President Roosevelt and ending with the Allied capture of Sicily, this volume includes Stalin’s persistent demands for the opening of a “Second Front,” messages between Churchill and his generals during the expulsion of the Axis from Africa, reports on the raging war in the Atlantic against the U-boats and Churchill’s famous speech to Congress in May 1943. As he celebrated “one continent redeemed” from the enemy’s grip, Churchill claimed before Congress that “the mellow light of victory now begins to play” on the World War.

In introducing the volume, Dr. Arnn pays tribute to his friend and former mentor:

“We mourn the loss of Sir Martin Gilbert, who passed away on February 3, 2015. Before becoming gravely ill in 2012, Sir Martin had worked on this biography for precisely fifty years, first as research assistant to Randolph Churchill, then from 1968 as the official biographer. I wrote about his contributions to the biography in the preface to volume 17 of The Churchill Documents, and I reassert here the vital and supreme contribution he has made to the study of Churchill and of modern history. He is one of the greatest of modern scholars, and he will be missed not only by his family, friends, and students, of whom I am proud to be one, but by all who wish to know the truth about this dangerous and promising era. His name appears as co-editor of this document volume in honor of his service and in recognition of the foundations he laid and the pattern he set for all the work that remains to be done.”
