The Churchill Centre will hold its annual black-tie dinner on Thursday evening, September 2, 2010, as part of the Annual Meeting of the American Poltiical Science Association in Washington, D.C.
Our speaker this year is Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard. Prior to going to Washington in 1985, Bill taught politics at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
When making hotel or travel arrangements, be sure to arrive in time on Thursday for this special dinner event.
When: Sunday, August 1, 2010, 4 to 8 pm. Our traditional "Red Hot & Blue" Memphis-style barbecue dinner (pulled pork, chicken, beef, baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw and, for dessert, some special bakery nummies) will precede our speaker. We'll have plenty of cold drinks on hand, too.
What: "The Grand Alliance in the Pacific: Another Coalition War" Most students of World War II are aware that it was a world-wide struggle between what Churchill called "The Grand Alliance" and the Axis powers. But after the February 1942 fall of Singapore to the Japanese, and the destruction of ABDA (the coalition of Australian, British, Dutch, and American forces), the Pacific side of that war belonged to the Americans. Despite that, it remained a kind of coalition warfare--a coalition between the U.S. Army and Navy. Our speaker will discuss the grand strategy of the Pacific War in this context showing how the big decisions of the war were often a product of political compromise.
It's time once again for... New England Churchillians Summer Picnic & Book Discussion

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Winston Churchill becoming Prime Minister during Britain's darkest hour in May 1940. Britain's darkest hour was also her finest hour, as in the same year Britain's brave fighting men fought against all odds in both the Battle of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain in 1940. The leadership Churchill provided to the nation, along with the competency of the commanders on the ground and the bravery of the men who fought in the skies, secured Britain from likely German invasion and preserved the British armed forces to persevere in standing alone.
To commemorate the spirit of Dunkirk, the Churchill Centre - Seattle is excited to announce an evening with David Ramsay, son to Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay who masterminded and led the Royal Navy's evacuation of Dunkirk and was later given the command of the combined Allied Naval Forces (some 5,000 vessels) for the Normandy invasion. David will talk in detail about his Father's impressive career and leadership in both the Dunkirk and Normandy campaigns. Tragically, Admiral Ramsay was killed in a plane crash in January 1945 and never lived to see the end of the War, despite being instrumental in its ultimate victory.
In addition, Steve Harper will provide an introduction to the remarkable story of the Dunkirk evacuation, codenamed Operation Dynamo. Over a nine day period the Royal Navy with a large number of requisitioned passenger vessels including the infamous little ships brought back thousands of stranded British and French soldiers under the direst of circumstances. Steve's grandfather was a 62 year old volunteer assigned to a small fishing vessel who had sailed with Admiral Ramsay in WWI.
Both Steve and David will be traveling to Dunkirk for the 70th anniversary celebrations at the end of May. These include the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships commemorative crossing of over 50 of the original little ships under Royal Navy escort and overflight by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight; and street naming ceremony in honor of Admiral Ramsay by the French authorities in Dunkirk.
The Dunkirk event will be held in the Great Hall of the Diocesan House at St. Mark's in Seattle. The evening will begin at 6:00pm with an opportunity to meet David Ramsay over a hearty selection of appetizers and desserts from Elizabeth & Alexanders. The cost of the evening will be $25 ($15 for students) and can be paid on arrival. Space is limited, so please contact me at
