Atlanta's own Bill VanDerKloot discusses his popular PBS movie "Flying the Secret Sky: The Story of RAF Ferry Command"
Documentary tells an unknown story of aviation during the Second World War Son Follows Father's WWII Adventures as Churchill's Pilot in Documentary Film Filmmaker William VanDerKloot grew up hearing his father make occasional references to Sir Winston Churchill around the supper table. It wasn't until 6th grade, when his class was asked to bring in WWII memorabilia from home that he fully understood what his father did during the war. "My mother said, why don't you bring this -- and it was a picture of the Prime Minister signed, "To Bill VanDerKloot, my pilot, Winston Churchill." I brought it into class and the teacher was astounded and said, "Is this yours?" ..because the first question people ask is, ‘Oh, so your father is British?' And I say, No, he is American." An American civilian.

Invitation to the Second Annual Winston Churchill Birthday Banquet |
|
|
Saturday, November 21, 2009 - 6:30 PM
The Churchill Society of North Carolina www.churchillsocietyofnorthcarolina.org
Invites you to the Second Annual Winston Churchill Birthday Banquet to be held at the Charlotte Country Club
Honoring: Mr. George M. Ivey, Jr.
George Ivey, Jr. has played an unassuming but integral role in the establishment of The Churchill Society of North Carolina. His guiding hand has helped us become one of the strongest chapters of The Churchill Centre and International Churchill Society and fulfill our mission of bringing the Churchill lessons of Leadership, Statesmanship and Courage to a new generation of young people in North Carolina. In cooperation with Dr. Wendell Musser, George shepherded our North Carolina chapter forward through its darkest hours when its very survival was in doubt. We are deeply indebted to Mr. Ivey for his steadfast leadership, valuable insights and unwavering commitment to keep “the record accurate and the memory green.” It has been sixteen years since the release of Volume One of “The Last Lion,” a projected 3-volume biography of Winston Churchill by William Manchester. Volume Two came five years later. Sadly, Mr. Manchester died in 2004 before completing the final volume of his work. Now at 350,000 words and almost complete, “Defender of the Realm” is expected to be released in 2010. Paul Reid, author of the forthcoming “Defender of the Realm,” will be our featured speaker. In 2004, Paul was appointed by William Manchester to complete this last volume of his triptych on Winston Spencer Churchill. Mr. Reid will preview the forthcoming work and the process involved in preparing this much-anticipated volume.

Churchill Centre's Leadership Dinner Honoring Bill Marriott |
|
|
November 10, 2009 - 6:30 PM
Please join us for The Churchill Centre's Leadership Reception and Dinner honoring Marriott International CEO, Bill Marriott, on Tuesday, November 10th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. The evening begins with a 6:30 p.m. reception followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
One of the world's most respected and admired business executives, Bill Marriott's career spans more than fifty years. A deeply committed Churchillian, he built Marriott International from a Washington-based family restaurant business founded by his father to a global lodging company with more than 3200 proprieties in sixty-seven countries and territories. He also maintains a fine Churchill library and is able to discuss the Great Man with erudition and humor. We hope you can join the Churchill Centre chairman, Laurence Geller, his event co-chairmen, Jonathan Tisch and Senator Gordon Smith, and special guests Senator Susan Collins and Governor Mitt Romney, in honoring Bill Marriott--a remarkable leader and devoted Churchillian.
The event benefits The Churchill Centre, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to keeping the words and achievements of Sir Winston Churchill vivid and accurate and highlighting Churchill's continuing relevance in a changing and volatile world.
