Washington Society for Churchill - Annual Summer Picnic |
Sunday, August 2, 2009 - 4 to 8 pm
Our traditional "Red Hot & Blue" Memphis-style bar-b-que dinner (pulled pork, chicken, beef, baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw and, for dessert, fruit cobbler with ice cream) will precede our speaker. We'll have plenty of cold drinks on hand, too! "With Affection and Admiration: Letters of George Marshall and Winston Churchill"
A discussion of what can be learned from the correspondence between the U.S. Army's wartime Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister. Based on an earlier exhibit at Marshall's Leesburg home, Dodona Manor, the talk draws upon a series of letters exchanged between the two leaders beginning early in the war, and continuing through Marshall's death in 1959. They reveal a lasting relationship of deep mutual respect. Provided by the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, and the George C. Marshall Research Library in Lexington, Virginia, the letters run the gamut from details of the invasion of Normandy to congratulatory messages for honors won. Our speaker, Rachel Thompson, directs special programs at the George C. Marshall International Center in Leesburg. For 31 years, Mrs. Thompson taught American history and government in Fairfax County. She co-authored a biography of General Marshall, and has written educational materials for many nonprofit organizations. She graduated from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee and holds a master's degree from George Mason University.

The Seattle Churchill Society Presents Dr. David Freeman |
30 May 2009
The Seattle Chapter of The Churchill Centre would like to invite you to a lecture to hear Dr. David Freeman from California State University on Saturday, May 30th at 7:30pm. Dr. Freeman will be talking about Churchill's involvement with the creation of the Modern Middle East in the 1920s. Freeman has completed research on Churchill's involvement as British Colonial Secretary after World War I when he was charged with the responsibility of creating Iraq and bringing the Ottoman Empire to its conclusion - much to the later distaste of Osama Bin Laden! It will be a very interesting lecture and lively discussion I am sure!
Dr. Freeman teaches history at California State University, Fullerton. He has been a member of the Churchill Centre for over twenty years and is a regular contributor of articles and book reviews to the Centre's journal Finest Hour. Additionally, he is the editor of a biographical study of Margaret Thatcher published this year in the UK.
The event will be hosted in the Great Hall of the Diocesan House at St. Mark's in Seattle. The evening will begin at 7:30pm with an opportunity to meet Dr. Freeman over a hearty selection of appetizers and desserts from Elizabeth & Alexanders. The cost of the evening is $25.00, which can be paid on arrival. We look forward to gathering again in Churchill's memory and apply the legacy of his leadership to the dialog of current events today facing the Western world.
