During the Second World War, new technologies played a key role in how the war was waged. Churchill called the race for scientific superiority ‘the Wizard War' and gave the innovators of the day his full backing. Taylor Downing looks at the mavericks, eccentrics and boffins who Churchill championed and how they contributed to an Allied victory.
Taylor Downing is an award-winning filmmaker and historian.

Churchill and the Empire: Myth and Reality |

The popular image of Churchill in relation to Empire is of an undisputed imperialist, utterly opposed to colonial freedom. In this lecture, Richard Toye unravels a far more complex picture of Churchill's relationship with the British Empire, spanning from his school days right through to his final premierships in the 1950s.
Richard Toye is Associate Professor at the University of Exeter.

27th International Churchill Conference - Charleston, South Carolina |

The 27th Annual International Churchill Conference will be held in conjunction with the regional meeting of the Churchill Centre.
The theme of the conference is "Churchill in the News," and will feature never-before-seen Churchill archive footage from the Movietone Newsreels collection at the University of South Carolina. Confirmed speakers include Churchill's granddaughter, Celia Sandys; Andrew Roberts, author of Storm of War, Masters and Commanders, and Eminent Churchillians; Lynne Olsen, author of Citizens of London and Troublesome Young Men; Paul Reid, author of Defender of the Realm, the last of the William Manchester 3-volume history of Winston Churchill; and Warren Kimball, author of Churchill and Roosevelt.
Allen Packwood, Director, Churchill Archives, Churchill College, will present "Making the news: How young Winston Churchill used the media to make his name."
The Francis Marion Hotel, 387 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403, has been selected as conference headquarters. Room rate is $209, single or double, plus $1.00/day ‘destination fee', and 12.5% tax. This is a smoke-free hotel; both sleeping and meeting rooms are non-smoking. A credit card deposit is required and is refundable only if room is canceled one week before the arrival date. After check in, if anyone must leave early there is a ½ day charge. Some events will be on the College of Charleston campus, across the street from the hotel.
In 1931 Winston Churchill recuperated at Hobcaw Barony, Bernard Baruch's estate, after his incident with the New York City taxicab. A preconference, optional tour to Hobcaw including a Low Country Boil, is confirmed for Thursday, March 24. You can find thier website here at Hobcaw Barony. Optional city tours and a plantation tour with lunch are being planned for Sunday, March 27.
