Winston Churchill is buried, alongside other members of the Churchill family, at St Martin’s, Bladon, just outside Blenheim Palace grounds.

A small church in a village of just under eight hundred people, it welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world every year to the burial place of Winston Churchill and the Churchill family and is a part of the Benefice of Blenheim, a group of five parishes just north of Oxford.

Following Churchill’s death on 24 January 1965, exactly seventy years to the day after his father, a state funeral took place in St Paul’s Cathedral, attended by the Queen and rulers from all over the world. Churchill’s burial at Bladon was private, in accordance with Lady Clementine Churchill’s wishes. It was Churchill’s wish to be buried in a corner of this country churchyard, near Blenheim Palace, his birthplace.

An official wreath laying ceremony takes place every year on 4 May, on behalf of the Danish Resistance Movement Association who fought alongside British troops during the WWII.

In 2015, a new stained glass window was installed at St Martin’s Church, Bladon, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of his death. There was previously no memorial to Churchill inside the church. The impressive stained glass window was installed on the South Side of the church. Emma Blount, a young award-winning stained glass artist designed the window reflecting the Christian heritage and is a subtle tribute to Churchill. Though the fundraising appeal is complete, you can find out more about the design at the Window Appeal website.
