Finest Hour 101, Winter 1998-99

Page 32

So many members have helped us in so many ways during 1998 that we would like to acknowledge them here, all in one place, many repeatedly. Nothing would exist without you. Every person who spends the money of this organization promises to use it to best advantage in “keeping the memory green and the record accurate.” We care about one thing: that Winston Churchill’s wit and wisdom, his intense optimism, his continued relevance and sound philosophy, be impressed as strongly upon the 21st Century as it has been in this.

SUBSCRIPTIONS…

are the one thing every member must pay once a year. The basic subscription rate of $35 ($20 for students or libraries) has been unchanged since 1994, which is a miracle. Not only is today’s $35 worth less than in 1994; but we have been expanding publications, our website, and our various services and activities furiously. Not only is the $35 you paid in 1994 worth only $28.50 today; it’s buying roughly twice the product. In effect you’re getting what cost $35 in 1994 for only $14.25!

That’s only part of the story. One-third of our members renew at levels higher than $35—and they account for two-thirds of our subscription income. These memberships are Contributing ($75), Sustaining ($125), Supporting ($250), Benefactor ($500) and Fellow ($ 1000). Every amount over the basic $35 (less the value of small tokens of thanks we send the larger donors) is tax-deductible by U. S. citizens. Many of these folks renew at their chosen level year after year, regardless of what they contribute to our other appeals. We’re not going to list all of you here because there are over 500. You know who you are from the thank-yous we send you. We just want you to know how deeply we appreciate your steady generosity.

Over and above membership renewals are the Heritage Fund, Conference Sponsorships, and the Churchill Center Endowment Fund. All of these are strictly optional; yet they receive support from hundreds of members.

THE HERITAGE FUND…

is our annual drive for contributions to our operating budget. The Churchill Center is a non-profit organization. This is a good thing, because we never make a profit! Indeed, if we relied strictly on member subscriptions, even including the high level ones, we could finance only about a fifth of our present output.

The 1998 Heritage Fund appeal was mailed to members in October. We are happy to report that nearly $16,000 has been received, and donations are still coming in. In 1998 we did something we had not done before: we offered no gifts of thanks to contributors; 100% of what they sent was tax-deductible. The hundreds of people who responded are listed below. Whether your gift was a dollar or a thousand dollars, we are deeply grateful that you cared enough to support the Churchill Center.

CONFERENCE AND STUDENT SPONSORS…

are those people who send more than their basic Conference registration to help support the event. For 1998, twenty-two Conference Sponsors (eight couples, six singles) contributed over $37,000 while twenty-nine Student Sponsors contributed $2,900—nearly $40,000 in all. It is also appropriate to thank our three corporate sponsors. The House of Raeford Farms and the Philip Morris Companies made major contributions; and Champagne Pol Roger contributed their prize product for a reception to thank our Conference Sponsors.

hank our Conference Sponsors. And how important these sponsors were! When all the bills were paid, the 1998 Conference was in the black to the tune of about $7,000 (all of which was plowed back into our operating budget). It is not hard to calculate where we would be if you had not been there for us. We would be issuing a truncated Finest Hour, among other things.

THE CHURCHILL CENTER ASSOCIATES…

are those who have contributed and/or pledged from $10,000 to $200,000 specifically to The Churchill Center Endowment Fund. Our Endowment is never spent, but invested to produce income that protects the principal against inflation and supplements our income. In 1998, the Endowment was responsible for 7.5% of our budget. Some day it will be paying 50%.

The way it works is simple: a Churchill Center Associate pledges a minimum of $10,000 cash (tax-deductible) in any installments he or she wishes, over a four-year period. Much larger amounts may be and have been pledged, but $10,000 is the cash minimum. In addition to contributions of cash, an Associate may add a bequest or a gift of property. An Associate’s total commitment—cash and otherwise—determines membership in one of three levels: Mary Soames ($10,000), Clementine Churchill ($25,000) and Winston Churchill ($50,000+) Associates. Many of us have reached for the higher levels by the combination of a basic gift plus a bequest. For example, many of us became Clementine Churchill Associates by combining $10,000 cash over four years with a bequest of $15,000.

ANNUITY PLAN FOR INVESTMENTS OF $1000 UP

Not everybody can afford $10,000. So we are developing an Annuity Plan which, through investments from as low as $1000, you may provide for The Churchill Center while benefiting yourself and your heirs, and providing yourself with income for life while saving a great deal of income tax.

Tony Gilles, one of our Associates who is an expert on “planned giving,” is available to consult with you at no charge on the plan that will best meet your personal, family and tax needs. Please call Tony for a copy of our booklet on the subject, or for answers to any questions you might have in this area: (423) 974-7396.

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS…

We also want to mention also the eight people to date who have given as much as $2,000 directly to the Endowment Fund, whose names also appear herewith. Actually this list used to be larger—but many have since decided to become Associates. All contributions to the Endowment can be credited to a $10,000 Associates commitment anytime within four years. Other Endowment contributors also may become Associates.

We remember in early 1997 when there were four Churchill Center Associates—then there were ten, and twenty. Today, sixty-three people and institutions are Associates. Members of our Board of Governors have still to contact many other members who have expressed interest. We are trying to do this as quickly as time permits. If you are wondering why you have not heard from us, please telephone us toll-free at (888) 4542275. We will be happy personally to explain the entire scenario, to send you our Prospectus and a videotape featuring Lady Soames, Celia Sandys, Martin Gilbert and Gregory Peck.
